Tube for Business

The telegraph, the telephone and the television… all profound leaps in making the world smaller.

The introduction of the Internet, though and, it’s exponential growth has shrunk the universe down to a 17 inch monitor in your office, kitchen or on vacation.

As bandwith grew and broadband becomes commonplace, images, video and other multimedia brings us closer to our neighbors around the world.

Nothing makes this more apparent than YouTube, showcasing everything from television shows, visual information and a dog that can skateboard. And with search engine mega-giant Google behind it, there is no limit on where it will take us.

The business world is starting to see it’s place in the YouTube environment posting presentations, meeting, company profiles and more. Before you enter an interview situation, you can learn about the potential employer and visually understand more about the company. With YouTubes topic areas, users, companies and organizations can have their own space of common interest. In other words, you or prospective viewers don’t need to search through the dog skateboarding videos, allowing your time to be better spent on the purpose of your visit.

All of this is leading us to a place of visual information. You can read volumes and without seeing, the visual and emotional human being cannot fully process the information.

Perhaps next will be ResumeTube, where employment candidates can save valuable time and present themselves as they are best presented… visually and conversationally. Resumes get across a great deal of two dimensional information written as dot points. A visual resume would allow candidates to  conversationally expound upon their knowledge and their potential benifit to an organization. People are doing it now, but it is far from common place. In a few years, there will be far less in written resumes. If you’re an IT person, especially one who specializes in media, the Web or will be presenting to groups, this is a venue you cannot and should not ignore. Make a few trials and have friends, co-workers and family review them. This is it. The Tube for Business snowball has begun it’s ride down the hill.

Check out YouTube again. This time, search for business, jobs, resumes or a company. Forget the skateboarding dog for now… well watch it after, it’s really cool.
